CHUNK! NO CAPTAIN CHUNK!
Something for Nothing
[Fearless Records]
Verdict: 3.0/10

Coming all the way from Paris, France, with their new album Something For Nothing are pop-punk/hardcore band Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! Besides their international heritage and unusually punctuated name, Chunk offers little on this release to differentiate themselves from the multitude of other “popcore” bands that exist. From the first track, you can get a sense of how the rest of the record is going to unfold; grating “metal” vocals, whiny, annoying clean singing, and cheesy as hell breakdowns in nearly every song. After my first listen through, I could not remember a single distinguishable moment in any song, save one. The acoustic beginning to “For All We Know” actually isn’t half bad; unfortunately, the band decides to ruin it towards the end by making it sound just like everything else. If a much larger portion of the album was composed of that acoustic style, the record would be much more listenable, at least. As it stands, this record is an overproduced, overcooked, generic as hell, cliché record, and there’s so much better music out there that it’s probably best to stay away. — by Trevor Kirch
