[MUSIC] Picture It In Ruins – Solipsism EP [REVIEW]

PICTURE IT IN RUINS
Solipsism EP
[unsigned]
Verdict: 8.5/10
RIYL: BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME, THE HUMAN ABSTRACT, THE CONTORTIONIST

What do you know that has come from Wyoming? Well whatever you can think of, add blistering progressive metalcore band PICTURE IT IN RUINS to that list. Their debut EP, Solipsism, sounds like the product of a seasoned band, showcasing fantastic musicianship and thought-provoking lyrics. In fact, the album’s title references the philosophical idea that only one’s own mind is sure to exist, so everything that is outside of one’s mind is not sure to exist. It’s certainly a deep concept, but you don’t need a PhD in philosophy to enjoy the album. The vocals of lead vocalist Luke Friebel are fantastic. He has a very wide range of screams and has surprising clarity- you don’t need a lyric sheet to understand most of the lyrics, which is not necessarily common. While the vocal duties are handled very well, it’s the music that absolutely shines. Featuring fantastic guitar work, epic songwriting, audible bass, and furious drumming, this EP is a feast for fans of BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME. Then add in atmospheric, semi-post-rock like interludes, which make the moments when the band hits hard all that much more effective. The album was produced by Jamie King, who has produced great releases from BTBAM and WHITE ARMS OF ATHENA, so the man knows how to make a progressive metal album sound perfect, and this EP is no exception. Overall, Solipsism is a highly entertaining progressive metal release that should be scooped up by fans of the genre. – by Nick Senior
