[MUSIC REVIEW] The Intersphere – Hold On, Liberty!
THE INTERSPHERE
Hold On, Liberty!
[Long Beach Records/SPV]
Verdict: 8/10
RIYL: Muse, Dredg, Incubus
Eventually it becomes harder and harder to find new and exciting music. It’s not that there are no more new bands to discover, but the time comes when you discover such a high quantity of awesome music that it’s hard to take a step back and remember how much fun it was before the digital age to discover a new favorite band; how great it was to pop in a CD for the first time and immerse yourself in your new favorite album. German progressive/alternative rock group THE INTERSPHERE helps bring me back to my roots a bit with their sound. The first time I heard “sleeping god”, I was absolutely hooked. It was one of those songs that you feel was written with you in mind. It’s heavy; it’s progressive and technical; and it’s catchy as hell. It basically sounds like a mix of the best parts of MUSE, DREDG, and INCUBUS put together into a blender. The problem is not ever song is filled to the gills with that perfect execution and vigor. Tracks like “hold on, liberty” and “OPalinE” also keep up with the sheer funky/progressive energy, but others like “open end” and “we are” don’t quite measure up. That’s the oddity; those are solid slabs of alternative rock, but when the aforementioned songs are so solid, the bar is set a bit too high to carry throughout the album’s forty-six minute run time. Hopefully on the band’s next album, they can write an entire album full of songs up to the standard they clearly can attain. Until then, we have a thoroughly enjoyable progressive rock album on our hands, and that’s enough for me. – by Nicholas Senior
