[MUSIC REVIEW] Stateside – Stand Clear of the Closing Doors

STATESIDE
Stand Clear of the Closing Doors
[Unsigned]
Verdict: 7/10
RIYL: Post-hardcore of yesteryear

New York’s own STATESIDE are bringing their brand of punk/post-hardcore to the masses, but should the world listen, or just walk through the “closing doors”? That question is easily answered in the affirmative, as STATESIDE has a sound that really caught me by surprise. The initial complaint I had of the album is it’s sound; the“rough” production was initially a negative, but it really adds to the aesthetic of an “old-time” post-hardcore album. Plus, the production value is perfectly fine, but compared to the overly compressed and auto-tuned production hell found in the genre, a more “pure” sound is very welcomed. In trying to describe the album, Stand Clear of the Closing Doors would probably be lumped in with the falsely-named “emo” scene of the early 2000s, but that is entirely meant as a compliment. With big choruses, an emphasis of passion over perfection, and quality musicianship, this is an album that will easily appeal to those who miss the music of ten years ago. It also can serve as a great example of how to write a post-hardcore album without breakdowns every thirty seconds. It’s actually a bit difficult to pin-point exactly whom the band reminds me of, yet the band’s sound is quite familiar. I credit that attribute to the band’s success, as the band has managed to cultivate its own sound in such a short period of time. Overall, STATESIDE is the type of band that fans of old THRICE, A DAY TO REMEMBER, and old RED JUMPSUIT APPARATUS will be able to enjoy. – by Nicholas Senior

>> In Conclusion: If you look back at the music of the early 2000s with fondness, then you should check out STATESIDE’s newest release. Featuring solid musicianship, well-crafted melodies, and songs that aren’t carried entirely by breakdowns, there’s a lot to like.
