[MUSIC REVIEW] Pigs – You Ruin Everything

PIGS
You Ruin Everything
[Solar Flare Records]
Verdict: 6/10
RIYL: UNSANE, CONVERGE, Noise Rock

PIGS is a dirty band. Consisting of members of UNSANE, CONVERGE and FRESHKILLS, their debut album You Ruin Everything is a noisy, angry, mess of an album, and I’m positive that is the way the band members intended it. The album is a nearly spot-on amalgamation of punk, hardcore, noise rock, and sludge, so if you are a fan of those genres, you are sure to enjoy PIGS. The album exudes a grimy nature that is evident in a manner of ways from the heavy bass-line and the crunch of the guitars. Readers may look at the verdict and assume I didn’t love the album (which is mostly true), but a 3/5 is still a solid score. The problem lies with the songwriting. For me, the album just lacks an “it” factor that keeps each song from not sounding too similar. Part of that is a typical side-effect of noise rock, as the production keeps everything noisy above all. Luckily, these fellows are more than competent, so the issues don’t ruin everything on You Ruin Everything. Instead, listeners are left with an enjoyable (but flawed) album that fans of multiple genres can jam to. – by Nicholas Senior
