[FEATURED INTERVIEW] Kiros

INTERVIEW WITH BARRY MACKICHAN (VOCALS/BASS) BY NICK SENIOR

First things first, could you introduce yourself for our readers?

Hi! My name is Barry MacKichan. I’m the singer/bassist for Kiros.

Can you describe your sound for those who haven’t heard of Kiros before?

I think we are a mixture of alternative, rock, punk, and pop. We’re driving and heavy, with soft spots and acoustic guitars thrown in their too.

Your latest album, Lay Your Weapons Down, was just released. It has been quite a long time from your first album to this, your sophomore release. Do you feel like the monkey is off your back now?

Yes, in a huge way. The monkey had turned into a fully grown silverback gorilla. We’ve been working on this record for a long time, making sure we did everything right. It took forever, but we think it’ll be worth the wait.

How do you feel about how the album has been received? Are you happy about the finished product?

So far the response has been excellent! We’ve received a lot of great reviews from the press, but more importantly from the fans. We are very happy about the record. We refused to release something we weren’t 100% satisfied with.

Who are some bands/artists that you’ve been listening to lately?

My recent playlist includes Safety Suit, Mariana’s Trench, Thrice, Jimmy Eat World, Maroon 5, Augustana, Blessed by a Broken Heart and Four Year Strong.

What is your favorite part about being Canadian?

Maple Syrup comes out of our taps instead of water, Canadian bacon is available for pennies (yes we have pennies in Canada), and natural hockey is bestowed upon us. Oh, and free health care!

Favorite hockey team?

Calgary Flames!! I’ve been a lifelong fan, and gone to plenty of games growing up. Tyler is an Edmonton Oilers fan, Ryan is a San Jose Sharks fan, and Jonny is Dallas stars fan. We’ve got some good rivalries going on.

What are your thoughts on the Canadian music market? Do you have any favourite bands from your homeland?

Canada has put out a lot of great bands (besides Justin Bieber ;) ) I love Our Lady Peace, Alexisonfire, Mariana’s Trench, TFK and many more. Canada is a much smaller music market, but it’s so cold for so much of the year that all there is to do (besides play hockey of course) is play music. I think that little fact alone creates a fertile breeding ground for talented musicians and good bands.

What do you guys do to keep yourselves entertained on the road?

We have an Xbox in the bus, and the only game that matters is permanently inside it (NHL 12.) All of us are really into Disc Golf, and there are free courses everywhere in the States. We’ve also got tennis rackets, longboards and random sports equipment in the trailer ready for free time.

What are your favourite cities and/or venues to play?

That’s a hard question. We really notice the increase in support in radio markets where our singles have been picked up. Every show has different aspects that make it memorable, and we look forward to every night on tour.

What have been the best and worst moments on tour?

Bus breakdowns are always discouraging, and stepping on stage every night is always worth everything else.

Who would be in your ideal tour line-up?

Justin Bieber and Kiros. Why not? If Justin turns us down, it’d be amazing to tour with Thrice or Jimmy Eat world. Those are bands I’ve looked up to and enjoyed for years. Also, I need to throw Blink-182 and New Found Glory in there, because they were huge influences in my early days, and a big part of why I play music now.

What inspired the lyrics to Lay Down Your Weapons?

The whole record is a concept album, following a personal journey of internally struggling to find hope, purpose and redemption. It’s split into 3 chapters (The Revolt, The Trenches, The Surrender.) The lyrics are very real, and from my heart. The past few years have seen some of my highest highs and lowest lows, and this record doesn’t shy away from honesty about those times.

Do you have a favourite song off that album?

“Something Beautiful”. It’s the final song on the record, and the finale of the story where hope is truly found. It’s about beautifully surrendering a broken life to the God who can put it back together into something so much better.

Do you have any touring plans lined up to support your new album?

Right now we’re out with Red, Thousand Foot Krutch, Manafest and Nine Lashes doing a full US tour. We’ve also confirmed a bunch of the major festivals for the summer, and we’re in talks for a few other big tours in the near future. Once we’ve got those confirmed, we’ll post the dates and details.

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about Kiros?

We work with World Vision to help end child slavery, child prostitution, and child soldiers. We think there is a lot of injustice in the world, and we want to change that as much as we can. Check out this link for more information: http://www.humanwrong.org/

[MUSIC INTERVIEW] Stateside

After reviewing their debut album, Stand Clear of Closing Doors, Nicholas Senior was able to talk with the band’s guitarist to get to know STATESIDE.

Can you introduce yourself for our readers?

My name is Chip Su and I play guitar for Stateside.

Could you describe your sound for those who haven’t heard of Stateside before?

We have a wide range of sounds in the album. We have a few songs that are heavy, a few are fast paced, and a few more poppy. We don’t want to label ourselves in certain genre because we write music with passion, not to fit into a certain category. I like to this this is what our fans like about us!

Who would you say has inspired your sound the most?

A Day To Remember, Saosin, Silverstein have all been incredibly influential for us.

What or who has inspired your lyrics?

Mike (our singer) should be the one answer this question haha. But, like the rest of the album, much our music and lyrics have been inspired by living in New York City, the city where we formed Stateside.

Your album was released on February 7th. What are your thoughts on the finished product and how it has been received?

I think it’s great!! We have a lot of positive feedback from friends, family and fans and hoping we can take it to the next level and start touring and spreading our music out there more

What’s the best part about being from New York?

I gotta admit we are lucky to live in such a great city! You can always find something to do, see, and experience, even at 4am! It’s really hard to pinpoint the best part but it’s somewhere between the awesome food, bars, and live music. We truly have it all.

Are you guys sports fans at all? What are your favorite teams?

Yes, I love Soccer and my favorite team Intermilan (Italy).

What music have you been listening to lately? Is there a group or artist that you’ve been jamming to lately that many would find to be unexpected?

Well.. I’d say I’ve listened to just about everything lately haha He is Legend is one I’ve been really into now that they’re back together! You probably wouldn’t think anything I’ve been listening to is really that unexpected though because I really tend to lean toward listening to the type of music our band plays.

What do you guys do to stay entertained on the road?

HA.. DEF NOT DRUGS!!! But honestly, we mostly listen to the radio/ new albums and try to find new music.

Do you have a favorite place to eat on the road?

YES! WAWA and IN & OUT Burger… not the healthiest but we love them!

What are your best and worst moments on tour so far?

Well with Stateside we haven’t really had a full tour just yet. But I’ve been on tour my previous bands so I’ll tell you some highlights from those:

The best moments were whenever we were meeting new people and new bands! Especially when they would feed us and let us sleep at their house! Also of course, playing music every night!

Worst Moments:
- One show got cancelled and we lost our guarantee aka we didn’t get paid
- Parking tickets and speeding tickets…those are the worst!
- Texas to New Mexico Border Patrol checking our van and
holding me some reason because I they thought I looked like a mexican (I’m Indonesian). Even after I showed them my ID they still didnt believe me!

Whats your favorite tv show?

Friends

What is your favorite album of all time?

Appetite for Destruction

Do you have any touring plans lined up in the future?

We’re in the process! I actually just bought the van and trailer, we have full merch so everything is good to go but we still don’t really have a solid plan yet. I’m hoping that I’ve learned enough from past touring experiences that we shouldn’t just tour independently (my old band lost TONS of $$ doing that). So the plan this time around would be trying to get with a bigger band to support their entire tour so if we have to lose money or break even, at least we will get the exposure that we need and hopefully get a spot on Warped Tour! Also, we all have full-time jobs, so we cant just leave right away, but we’re definitely in the planning process!

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?

Yes, I want thank to fans who been supporting Stateside in the past a year and half, our friends who have stood by us during both the happiest and saddest moments. I’d like to thank my family too! I couldn’t have gotten to this point without their support. Last, big thanks to Big Picture Media and Excess Db Entertainment.

[MUSIC NEWS] Black Numbers to release No Motiv vinyl

Black Numbers to release No Motiv’s “Winterlong” EP on vinyl!
No Motiv’s Winterlong EP now available for preorder on vinyl in our webstore.

Winterlong available March 6, 2012 on Black Numbers. “Beginning from the End” streaming now at theblacknumbers.com.

No Motiv’s (Oxnard, CA) first release in nearly eight years, Winterlong, is now available from Jersey City label Black Numbers (PJ Bond, Go Rydell, Grey Area, Luther) in the limited vinyl format. Following a storied career at the height of the emo in-a-good-way scene which included four releases on Vagrant Records and numerous worldwide tours with the likes of The Get Up Kids, Hod Rod Circuit, The Anniversary, among others, No Motiv returns with this six song offering. Following their indefinite hiatus, the band wrote the Winterlong EP and released it digitally and via CD in fall 2011. More cohesive yet atmospheric than their earlier releases, Winterlong is a clear progression for the band’s sound without straying too far from their foundation.

The band most recently played a handful of west coast shows with Hot Rod Circuit and hope to continue playing select headline shows and festival dates.

The vinyl is limited to 500 pieces, 100 Clear, 150 Colorlight Blue, 250 White. All colors as well as limited test press packages and an exclusive t shirt are available in our webstore

[MUSIC NEWS] No Idea Announce 2012 Releases

 Breaking News!

No Idea Records
Announces 2012 Releases, Signings, Tour Dates and More!

Solid PR is excited to announce its representation of one of the most celebrated independent record labels of the modern era, No Idea Records. Originally formed in 1985 as a fanzine, No Idea’s first releases in the late 80′s by the Doldrums and Bay Area punk heroes Crimpshrine, would lay the groundwork to what would become home to some of the most influential bands for decades to come.

Representing their home-town of Gainesville, Florida with great passion and pride, No Idea has released records for some of the most revered artists in punk rock history, including Against Me!, Hot Water Music, Alkaline Trio, Dillinger Four, Jawbreaker, Less Than Jake, J Church, Coalesce, Planes Mistaken For Stars, Leatherface, Samiam, Off With Their Heads and countless others who have cemented their legacies in independent and mainstream music.

Currently, No Idea maintains its place at the forefront of the burgeoning punk rock community, having released records in 2011 for championed artists such as Bridge and Tunnel, Good Luck, The Measure (sa), Hawks and Doves, Shores, Traveling, Armalite, Ampere, and Latterman, as well as veteran heroes of the genre such as Seaweed and Samiam.

Most exciting, though, might actually be what No Idea has in store for 2012. New releases and signing announcements include bands like Philadelphia’s haunting and cerebral-rock sensation Creepoid, Louisville’s thrash n’roll hybrid Black God (featuring members of Coliseum, By The Grace of God and Black Cross), Gainesville’s own Replacements-inspired Chris Wollard & The Ship Thieves, future grindcore legends DNF (featuring members of Trash Talk and Touche Amore), Grand Rapids’ stargazing slow-core act Shores (for fans of Codeine / Bedhead / Red House Painters / Three Mile Pilot) and Billy No Mates (featuring members of Snuff from the UK). In addition, mainstays such as The Bomb, Worn In Red, Grabass Charlestons, and Burning Love will all be dropping new material in 2012, not to mention the list of reissues and live releases from legendary acts such as The Swarm, Cleveland Bound Death Sentence, Hot Water Music, Samiam and The Blacktop Cadence. To say the least, the year ahead should prove to be the most diverse and compelling twelve months of releases the label has seen since its inception.

No Idea Records and Distribution is owned and operated by Var Thelin and Jennifer Crosby, with help from some of Gainesville’s best and brightest. As Razorcake Magazine said in their 2010 interview with Thelin discussing the label’s 25 year history and 300+ releases, “It’s not easy to start a record label… and actually sell records… and not be a douchebag… and remain friends with the bands after the record’s out… No Idea is one of the prime examples of what the best of DIY punk is capable of, in any decade.”

* No Idea bands from the 2011 and upcoming 2012 schedule of releases have currently announced upcoming live shows around the country and the globe (a full itinerary can be found below). Writers and publications interested in covering any of the recently released 2011 No Idea albums should drop a line and we’ll make sure to get them in your hands immediately.
