[REVIEW] Vinnie Caruana – City By The Sea

vinnie carunaVINNIE CARUANA
City by the Sea
[Run for Cover Records]
Verdict: 8/10
RIYL: Anthony Raneri, The Movielife, Go Radio

If you are unfamiliar with the name VINNIE CARUANA, then one quick listen to any song on his debut EP will refresh your memory. His voice is one of the most unique in punk music, as the vocal member of The Movielife, I Am Avalanche, and Peace’d Out. Much like the debut from Bayside’s Anthony Raneri, Vinnie embraces his heart-on-his-sleeve persona. While the songs may be stripped down from the standard punk format, City by the Sea is six tracks of unplugged bliss. While there is also percussion and piano, the EP is really just a man alone with his thoughts and a guitar. The difference between many acoustic outputs and City by the Sea is that Vinnie is quite talented, and his thoughts are poignant. Lines like “When there was nothing else, I know that I’m not here just for myself,” showcase the level of emotion fans of Vinnie’s past works remember. If you’re more in the mood for upbeat folk, then “Boy You’re in Heaven” will be your cup of tea. The hook is easily the sharpest on the EP, and it’s been stuck in my head since I first heard the song. Of course, with any side project, the results will be compared to the artists other work. Nothing on here is as fantastic as anything on Forty Hour Train Back to Penn, but that’s clearly not the point. Vinnie had a vision of writing some acoustic folk jams, and City by the Sea clearly succeeded with that goal. Sometimes an album can be as simple as that. – by Nick Senior

[REVIEW] The Color Morale – Know Hope

the color moraleTHE COLOR MORALE
Know Hope
[Rise Records]
Verdict: 8/10
RIYL: Dance Gavin Dance, Stray from the Path, Close Your Eyes

You know the expression, “one step forward, two steps back.” It embodies the idea that sometimes change isn’t always beneficial. However, with the new album from THE COLOR MORALE, I have no idea how to itemize the band’s steps. My Devil in Your Eyes was a rousing success at combining technical metalcore (a la MISERY SIGNALS) with soulful, melodic post-hardcore in the vein of EMAROSA. Know Hope sees the band toning down the metallic aspects of its sound for a more melodic yet hardcore format. For example, the band has all but lost the djent stylings of past works, yet they are more technical. The album’s lead single really encapsulates this change. “Learned Behavior” features guitar work right out of the August Burns Red playbook mixed with a chorus so soulful that Jonny Craig wished he wrote it. The group’s unique approach to songwriting harkens back to the best of BELOVED, when post-hardcore bands didn’t always leave the singing to the chorus and the screaming to the verses and breakdowns.

The most notable change in the band’s dynamic is that vocalist Garret Rapp has taken control of all of the vocal duties. His soulful croon is still on high display, but his harsh vocals embody the same space as STRAY FROM THE PATH’s Drew York. I loved the meaty screams of the past two albums, but the change ends up working out in the end. Two songs point out where the band is and where it used to be. “Silver Lining” accentuates the group’s hardcore roots and harkens back to a day when the genre was at its peak. It’s easily the heaviest song on the album, so there is little surprise that it also deserves top billing. However, when compared to the heaviest song from My Devil in Your Eyes, it’s hard not to be disappointed that the band dropped some of its metal roots. Next up is “Steadfast”, which is unquestionably the most melodic the group has ever been. It sounds like a melodic hardcore group covering an EMAROSA song, and I mean that in the best way possible.

Overall, this is an album that has left me conflicted. It lacks the immediacy of My Devil in Your Eyes, but this new hardcore-based foundation certainly works for the group. While THE COLOR MORALE has lost some of its trademark metallic edge, the band has not lost its passion for providing hope. The lyrics are occasionally pretty poor, but the message is of hope perpetually permeates the music. In an age of cynicism, narcissism, and negativity, the band’s mission is a welcome change. While it’s fun to argue how many steps forward or backward THE COLOR MORALE TOOK, it’s undeniable that Know Hope is a rousing success for a band on the rise. – by Nick Senior

[NEWS] Anti-Flag and Hostage Calm Team Up w/ Peta2

Anti-Flag & Hostage Calm Team Up with Peta2 for Charity Test Press Auction

antiflag hostagwe clamAnti-Flag and Hostage Calm are auctioning off a test press of their new split 7″ to benefit Peta2. The split officially comes out next Tuesday via Run For Cover Records and recently relaunched A-F Records. Check out the auction here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=321076802807

The split features one new song from each band pressed on three beautiful combinations of red, white and blue splatter with an etched b-side. Proceeds from record sales will go to benefit two charities based in each band’s hometown. The record is due out February 26 and is available for pre-order now from Run For Cover’s webstore: http://is.gd/NN1J2y

In 2012 Anti-Flag conquered Europe with Hostage Calm among festival dates with Rancid and the Bouncing Souls, and also released their latest full length “The General Strike”. This year marks 20 years of Anti-Flag; to celebrate their anniversary the band will be playing a string of west coast tour dates in March. Hostage Calm are coming off their critically acclaimed “Please Remain Calm” released in October 2012, which was heralded as “a near masterpiece,” an “essential album of 2012″ and a “9.5 out of 10″ by AbsolutePunk.

“Hostage Calm are one of the most important new bands we have had the pleasure to meet in years,” said Chris #2 of Anti-Flag. “Their tireless efforts to continue the aesthetic of equality in the punk rock scene are to be applauded. While sonically our avenues may be different, the ideals and the agendas of each band are intrinsically similar.”

“We’re honored to be working with Anti-Flag on this musical and community project,” said Chris ‘Cmar’ Martin of Hostage Calm. “AF was a big reason a lot of us originally got into punk, politics and community activism in the first place. Their insistence on making social justice and political action a centerpiece of the punk scene continues to inspire us. For them to give a new band like us a platform like this speaks to their genuine interest in building the scene and bringing new ideas to the table.”

The bands chose to benefit these two organizations:

Assemble is an open physical space in an urban neighborhood in Pittsburgh. Their goal is “to unite artists, technologists, and makers with our neighbors of all demographics as well as provide a platform for experiential learning, opening creative processes and building confidence through making.”

Music Haven is New Haven-based string quartet focused on building “a vibrant urban community through performance and music education that empowers young people, their families, and professional musicians.”

Both bands will be on tour this March supporting the split release and their recent full-lengths.

[REVIEW] Off With Their Heads – Home

offwiththeirheadsOFF WITH THEIR HEADS
Home
[Epitaph Records]
Verdict: 9.5/10
Classification: Gruff Punk/Post Rock

Off With Their Heads get better with every release, and – even considering how awesome In Desolation was – Home is the band’s best work yet. The ever gut-wrenching, honest lyrics have returned, and are even better here than anywhere previous. Right from the start, Ryan Young is roughly singing lines like “There’s no words to describe the awful feeling I have inside, so I’ll shut down” and “It’s a long way back to be anything anyone could love”. It only gets harder to hear from there, but it’s in Young’s words that fans find safety to express themselves. He says things most of us won’t mumble aloud, even if we are strongly feeling them. It’s that connection that makes Off With Their Heads such an amazing band. Their music is easy to relate to, and vent through, making it a valuable addition to your collection. Home is full of sorrow, hate, and regret. However, as it plays through, the listener will also hear words of wisdom and increasing hope. This means the band is covering an ever wider spectrum this time around. You have your lows and your highs. While lyrically difficult tracks like “Nightlife” and “Don’t Make Me Go” will remain my personal favorite, there’s a lot of good to be found in “Focus On Your Own Family” and “Take Me Out”. Most of the positive lyrics are scattered through the record (and not always obvious at first), but the fact that they’re there shows a gradual growth in the band. Right from the words of Young, this record is “about getting older, and not being OK with it. It is about how religion can destroy a family. Finally, it is a dedication to anyone who can relate.” Well, I continue to relate, making Home another important record in my personal collection. This is an excellent album, and the writing is superb. Do yourself a favor and check it out, even if you’re not a fan of the genre. – by Nathaniel Lay

[REVIEW] Silverstein – This Is How The Wind Shifts

silverstein-this-is-how-the-wind-shifts-e1353960571471SILVERSTEIN
This Is How The Wind Shifts
[Hopeless Records]
Verdict: 9/10
Classification: Melodic Screamo

For me (and most of the world), Silverstein broke onto my radar with When Broken Is Easily Fixed in 2003. That means this band has been playing through my speakers for ten years now. I’ve closely watched their progress, and while not every album was spectacular, they’ve always held my interest. One of my favorite moments in journalism was hanging with vocalist Shane Told during their Take Action Tour a couple years back. Since their official ten year anniversary (in 2010), the band has put a small collection of records. We had Decade (the live CD/DVD chronicling their best songs), Transitions (an entertaining EP in the likes of Discovering the Waterfront), Rescue (their fifth studio full length), and Short Songs (a two disc set of original punk anthems, and cover songs). In other words, this is a band that keeps busy. They’re back again, this time with This Is How The Wind Shifts, and it is quite excellent. Considering Rescue was a little weak, and Short Songs wasn’t really Silverstein, it was a major relief to discover the band’s refueled glory on this collection. Featuring fourteen tracks total, This Is How The Wind Shifts brings in a mixture of elements spanning every release the band has done over the years. There are times you’ll be reminded of their oldest material (“This Is How”), their most popular days (“On Brave Mountains We Conquer”), their middle years (“A Better Place”), and something a little different (“In Silent Seas We Drown”). Playing through the album is made all the more interesting with this combination of styles, creating a track list that could be defined as “definitive”. Silverstein are back and stronger than they’ve been in years with This Is How The Wind Shifts. Those that have followed the band’s entire career will probably love this record the most, but it’s also an excellent starting point for new listeners of Silverstein. – by Nathaniel Lay
>> Recommended Tracks: “On Brave Mountains We Conquer”, “This Is How”, “A Better Place”, “With Second Chances”

SECOND OPINION REVIEW
Verdict: 7.5/10

As someone who has followed the genre since its inception, I would argue that Canada’s SILVERSTEIN is one of the most consistent bands in modern post-hardcore. At its worst, the band has still been good, so it’s no surprise that their sixth album is another reminder of SILVERSTEIN’s consistency. While so many of the group’s peers have softened up or gone radio rock, the band preferred to hone its signature sound. This is How the Wind Shifts sees the band going back to a concept album format. The first seven songs tell the story of the main character making one decision, while the flip side of the story is found seven songs later. It’s really interesting how the songs are so connected thematically, yet the tracks carry a life of their own. “Massachusetts” may be the best song the band has ever written, and “In Silent Seas We Drown” might be the group’s most interesting track. While This is How the Wind Shifts may not sway many of the band’s detractors, it’s clear that SILVERSTEIN is still alive and kicking thirteen years after its inception. That alone is worthy of a heap of praise. – by Nick Senior

[NEWS] BoySetsFire To Release New Record via Bridge Nine Records

BRIDGE NINE RECORDS TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM FROM BOYSETSFIRE

Band Is Currently Recording First Studio Album Since 2006

“We are looking forward to another two decades… dear god…” – BoySetsFire

boysetsfireBoySetsFire has been a band for nearly two decades. In that time the band has played hundreds of shows to anyone that would watch, from basements to festival audiences. They’ve lived through the terror or rap-rock, the tyranny of nu-metal, and the dark days of pop-punk. They were around before the internet. They made demo tapes. They recorded 4 LP’s, EP’s, Cd’s and even a cassingle. They have played the song “Rookie” over 1,000 times. They have fallen off more stages than most people have stood on. They have been signed and dropped and signed and dropped. Frankly, most bands would have given up years ago. Now, BoySetsFire are excited to announce that they’ll be recording their first studio album in almost 7 years, marking their first partnership with Bridge Nine Records. BSF guitarist Joshua Latshaw said, “We are excited to announce that Bridge Nine will be releasing the next BoySetsFire full-length in select territories. We could not be happier to be associated with the label, who has put out some of our favorite records and came highly recommended by bands currently working with them. It was their reputation as honest and passionate that was the single most important factor to us in deciding to work with them. Our new record is maybe more punk, maybe faster than our other records but its still a BoySetsFire record. It’s emotional post-hardcore with elements of metal, punk and melody. We can’t wait for you to hear it!”

BoySetsFire are currently working on their yet-to-be-titled album at Signal 2 Noise Studio in Newark, DE. The band has a brand new member (Dan Pelic – drums), and old member coming back (Robert Ehrenbrand – bass), a longtime friend officially joining (Rev. Chris Rakus, sharing bass duties with Ehrenbrand) and the three original grayhairs Chad Istvan (guitar), Nathan Gray (vocals) and Joshua Latshaw (guitar) playing together. Bridge Nine Records will be releasing this album in North and South America, as well as Asia and Australia.

Bridge Nine’s Seth Decoteau commented, “It’s a real honor to be working with BoySetsFire; they’ve influenced a lot of great bands today. Having been a fan of the band since The Day The Sun Went Out, i’m very excited for this release both personally and professionally. It’s awesome to be working with a band that has such a great history and a clear artistic vision. All of us here at B9 are glad to be a part of their first new music since 2006.” Look for more information on this new BoySetsFire full-length album coming soon from Bridge Nine Records and a new BSF shirt in the B9Store.

[REVIEW] The Plot In You – Could You Watch Your Children Burn

The Plot In You - Could You Watch Your Children Burn (2013)THE PLOT IN YOU
Could You Watch Your Children Burn
[Rise Records]
Verdict: 9/10
Classification: Metalcore

Having never cared for The Plot In You in the past, I wasn’t expecting much from Could You Watch Your Children Burn. This is a perfect example of how a band can surprise you long after you’ve given up hope. The band’s new record is an immediate powerhouse dripping in aggressive energy. Opening with “Premeditated”, The Plot In You quickly show off every shining angle of their arsenal. While the track instantly goes down as a highlight of the collection, Could You Watch continues to impressive and surprise as the album plays through. With improved vocals (the singing is unexpectedly smooth and powerful, while the screams are more frantic and chaotic this time around), sharpened instruments, and a more focused writing style, the band really pulls out all the stops during this record. Their moments surprisingly melodic and memorable, and others down right brutal and crazed. Even though there are several soaring choruses that take the listener by surprise (“Troll” is a truly impressive and atmospheric track in particular), it is the insane breakdowns that steal the show in the end. Tracks like “Digging Your Grave” and “Population Control” are so intense and pissed off, you can’t help but want to break shit when blasting them. What it comes down to in the end is that The Plot In You have broaden their formula with Could You Watch. Some fans may not like this, but it should be argued the band has not lost their edge in the transformation. They are still as violent and dark as before, even if their writing is expanding from death metal, guttural growls. This record is an unexpected blast. – by Nathaniel Lay
>> Recommended Tracks: “Premeditated”, “Digging Your Grave”, “Population Control”, “Troll”

[BRIEF INTERVIEW] w/ Those Who Fear

those who fear coverLMP Interview w/ Josh Miller (Drums) by Nathaniel Lay

Have you heard of THOSE WHO FEAR yet? They’re the latest addition to the Facedown Records roster, and they will will hit your speakers this February with Unholy Anger, the full length follow up to their self-released Legacy EP. During an in depth interview with Josh Miller (drums) for another magazine, we had so much left over content that we could not just let go to waste! Here are the words that will not appear in print anywhere else…

How did the band form? From where are you guys hailing?

We come from Pennsylvania. We all come from Pittsburgh, except our guitar player, Trevor, who is from Orlando. The band actually formed during 2006/2007. They started off more so as a regional, tri-state act, weekend warrior kind of thing, playing just the neighboring states. Not doing too much touring until 2009. That’s when they became more of a national touring band. Maybe not quite that level, but branching out and trying to get too many states as possible.

How is the scene in PA? How did it affect the making of your band and your music?

It’s sort of a tough city to come up in as a metal band. It’s not like the Hollywood of the West Coast, where you can play a show at any venue and have some guy that owns a label there. It’s not really a music industry, based city. Kids like what they like. If you’re not right there, you’re not going to get played there. It’s a harsh city. It’s hard to become a popular band of the city. So our music is really aggressive and really heavy, after the kids of where we’re from. Most of the city is a hard, blue collar, working city, and that’s how we try to put out our music.

What bands inspire Those Who Fear?

All kinds of bands, even the kinds we may not even sound like. We listen to a lot of Bury Your Dead, Emmure, Acacia Strain…any thing that is really heavy could fall into the category. There are some of our other favorite bands that aren’t quite that style, like Trivium and Distburbed, that still may do something on their records to inspire something we later try in our style.

With your genre, having the Christian element there especially, there are a lot of fans that will go to bands and tell them how a specific album or song may have helped them in life, maybe even kept them from doing something drastic. It gave them hope, understanding, compassion, or something else along those lines. Have you guys experienced anything like that yet?

For sure. Even back during the earlier years, we would have people come to us and tell us how they waited all week to hear us play, and we talk to them, they’d tell us how some lyrics helped them. Or if not that, at least how they can relate to the songs and connect. And that means a lot to us. It’s very flattering to have the kids care about the music so much.

When reading up on you guys, it was noted that you’re a band with a message. Being with Facedown Records, that is to be expected. But I wanted to hear your specific view on it, and how you would define your presence.

We are a Christian band. We all have that common ground, where we base our lives on that, Christianity, and Jesus Christ. We try to show that through our music without watering down. We want it raw and straight forward. There’s an option to the kids where this may not be for them, but that’s OK. I’m free to listen to a band that says they hate God, but I want to know why. So we do the same thing in our music. We tell them why we believe in what we do, which can expose the kids to something they’ve never heard. It can give them hope, and we want them to know Jesus loves them.

How does your message maybe affect your touring, such as how you act as a band in public, or present yourselves on stage, et cetera?

We like to pray off stage, but not because we’re embarrassed to do so. We prayed on stage for three years. But like tours we’re doing now, you only have so much time allotted for you to play. So we like to do it before we go on stage, so if anything does go wrong, we have those extra minutes to fix our show. Because that’s our ticket to show people who we are and what believe. It’s really hard to get that all out while you’re on tour. But at our merch table, we do have a ton of bibles that we give out free to kids who are interested. So we do things like that at our shows.
