Music Review: GYM CLASS HEROES – The Papercut Chronicles II

GYM CLASS HEROES
The Papercut Chronicles II
[Decaydance / Fueled By Ramen]
Verdict: 9.5/10
Generally, I’m not much for rap or its sub genres, but Gym Class Heroes have always found a way to get me interested. Their last album, and my interview with the guys, especially turned me into a fan, so of course I’ve been awaiting this release eagerly. Luckily, it didn’t let me down. Other than ending too quickly for me, the Papercut Chronicles II is the band’s best work yet. “Za Intro” is a flashback to old days that works surprisingly well and is humorous. The first actual song, “Martyrial Girl$”, is an immediate success with its fast verses and large sounding chorus. Even without all the guest appearances on this record, these tracks would kill; but hearing Oh Land, Adam Levine, and the several others is awesome. Oh Land on “Life Goes On” makes that song more beautiful and mystical sounding, and Adam Levine on “Stereo Hearts” is about as awesome as “Billionaire” was on Travie’s solo record. As the Papercut Chronicles II plays through, it becomes quickly evident that every song is golden in some way. Though it’s not too often that Travie actually sings himself, there are moments where he steps up on this album and sounds better than ever. The rest of the group seem to be stepping further away from the rock focus of previous albums, and are now leaning heavily on the pop influence. Probably the most interesting and different sounding track on the list is the finale. “Kid Nothing and the Never-Ending Naked Nightmare” is experimental, frantic at times, and even features some support screaming. Gym Class Heroes have gone all out on this record, once again 1-upping themselves. The Papercut Chronicles II is an awesome release that will easily make Top 10 lists for the year. A couple more songs would have helped push this album over the top, but that is my only complaint. – by Nathaniel Lay
> Recommended Tracks: All of them are excellent, but my favorites include “Martyrial Girl$”, “Life Goes On”, “Stereo Hearts”, “Holy Horseshit, Batman!”, “Lazarus, Ze Gitan”
> Release Date: November 15, 2011
> Guest Appearances: Oh Land, Adam Levine, Neon Hitch, Ryan Tedder
> Bottom Line: Gym Class Heroes only get better with every record, and Papercut Chronicles II is damn near perfection. If you were ever a fan, you’re going to love this one. If you’ve never heard this band before, then jump on this record asap.
