[MUSIC NEWS] Black Numbers to release No Motiv vinyl

Black Numbers to release No Motiv’s “Winterlong” EP on vinyl!
No Motiv’s Winterlong EP now available for preorder on vinyl in our webstore.

Winterlong available March 6, 2012 on Black Numbers. “Beginning from the End” streaming now at theblacknumbers.com.

No Motiv’s (Oxnard, CA) first release in nearly eight years, Winterlong, is now available from Jersey City label Black Numbers (PJ Bond, Go Rydell, Grey Area, Luther) in the limited vinyl format. Following a storied career at the height of the emo in-a-good-way scene which included four releases on Vagrant Records and numerous worldwide tours with the likes of The Get Up Kids, Hod Rod Circuit, The Anniversary, among others, No Motiv returns with this six song offering. Following their indefinite hiatus, the band wrote the Winterlong EP and released it digitally and via CD in fall 2011. More cohesive yet atmospheric than their earlier releases, Winterlong is a clear progression for the band’s sound without straying too far from their foundation.

The band most recently played a handful of west coast shows with Hot Rod Circuit and hope to continue playing select headline shows and festival dates.

The vinyl is limited to 500 pieces, 100 Clear, 150 Colorlight Blue, 250 White. All colors as well as limited test press packages and an exclusive t shirt are available in our webstore

Music Review: RIDGEMONT – Colder Days

RIDGEMONT
Colder Days
[Kiss Of Death / Mission Social Club / Mindless Records]
Verdict: 6/10
The thing with Ridgemont is that they don’t have a sound that helps them stand out from the crowd of punk bands already out there. They’re not especially energetic or crazy or melodic or catchy. They kind of just fall in the middle of things. As a result, so does Colder Days. Listening to this album is a decent enough time if you just want some punk background noise, but to focus on it and want to jam to it would be a different story. The songs don’t jump out at you really, and a lot of the writing seems uninspired. Some of the vocal styles are decent reminders of other great artists of the genre, but Ridgemont doesn’t succeed in making the gruffness a trademark for their own sound. Unfortunately, Colder Days is left best as background music when you don’t have something else you’re specifically interested. It’s OK, but nothing special. – By Nathaniel Lay
>> Recommended Tracks: “No Cream, No Sugar”, “Dopes and Schemes”, “Some Little ‘Filly’ Broke Your Heart?”, “Heads: Boston, Tails: Boulder”
>> Vinyl Specifics: The artwork for this album is kind of boring, but it suits the band considering they’re punk images (the cover shows the band sitting on the couch stinking and lighting firecrackers). The vinyl inside is also on the bland side; it’s just black and the center is of images I couldn’t recognize as anything. However, the insert is special. Instead of a piece of paper with lyrics, it’s a booklet! Not only that, but it’s full of images to make it look like a war pamphlet of sorts. Very cool!
>> Bottom Line: Ridgemont have some stuff going for them, but for now, Colder Days fails to jump out at the listener. It’s decent punk with some potential, but the band has some more work before them if they want to start spreading like a wild fire.

Music Review: HALF HEARTED HERO – Running Water

HALF HEARTED HERO
Running Water
[Animal Style Records]
Verdict: 8/10
Half Hearted Hero are one of those punk rock bands that I find entertaining to play, but not catchy enough to stick with me. Running Water is a six track vinyl that packs plenty of energy and well written moments, but still doesn’t keep me thoroughly entertained. With some more melody and hooks, I think these guys could be awesome. However, they seem to prefer to the more “raw” approach to punk rock. As they stand, Half Hearted Hero are worthy of a good time for sure. Running Water is a fun EP that shows a band with unique instrumental style and somewhat gruff vocal work. – By Nathaniel Lay
>> Recommended Tracks: “Five Points”, “Start Where You Are”, “Periphery”
>> Vinyl Specifics: The production on this LP is great. The cardboard sleeve is well printed with some killer artwork. Slid over it is one of those “rubber band” cut out things (I really don’t know what they’re called) with the band name, album title, and logo printed on it. Remove that and pour out the contents of the sleeve, and we found a reddish brown 12” with some cool artwork in the center. If the vinyl itself didn’t look cool enough, the insert is just fantastic. It’s a hard print with one side featuring a live photograph of the band (along with the album credits), and the other side featuring the lyrics and some more great artwork. Once again, Animal Style Records have gone all out on their vinyl production. This is top notch.
>> Bottom Line: Fans of punk rock should definitely check out Half Hearted Hero. Unlike most bands of the genre, these guys have a unique way of playing their instruments. While I’d still prefer more melody and hooks in the future, I still found Running Water to be quite good and worthy of exposure.

Music Review: BORN WITHOUT BONES – Say Hello

BORN WITHOUT BONES
Say Hello
[Animal Style Records]
Verdict: 8.5/10
Born Without Bones, a punk/indie rock band from MA, have recently released Say Hello on multiple formats, and it’s quite a surprise. Right from the start, this record gets you hooked and interested. “Say Hello” may have a simple group chorus fueling it, but it’s so damn catchy that it reels you in instantly. The first portion of the LP is pretty much upbeat and fun, with “Falling Asleep” and “Consider This” being some of the most entertaining tracks. However, come the time of “Sound of a Crowded Room”, Say Hello takes things down a lot of notches for the remainder of the album. This song in particular is a cute, quiet track (for the most part) with some backing female vocals to give it some more depth. From the last handful of tracks, things may get a bit boring to some. Personally, I was so stoked through this record until things started slowing down big time. Even when the band is still doing something interesting during these quiet moments, like with “You”, Say Hello tends to become too soothing and silent to keep you awake. Nonetheless, there’s going to be a portion of listeners who will be happy to hear the band breaking things up between the fast and slow. Born Without Bones have released a pretty damn good album with Say Hello, and it becomes increasingly better with every repeat listen. – By Nathaniel Lay
>> Recommended Tracks: “Say Hello”, “Falling Asleep”, “Consider This”, “You”, “Sunday”, “The Camera Turns”
>> The B-Sides: This download was a real cool addition, considering most bands will add maybe one bonus track. Not Born Without Bones, however. They added EIGHT. I wouldn’t say any of them really come out at you as exceptionally memorable, but they are all good nonetheless. There are one or two that sounded like they could have easily been used on the final track listing for Say Hello, but for whatever reason didn’t make the cut. More bands should do this, because it’s awesome getting so much for your money. With these eight bonus songs, you’re coming out with a total of twenty tracks.
>> Vinyl Specifics: The LP we were sent with review came with a download code for the digital album (with the b-sides). The vinyl itself was a nice orange with the middle made to look like an old timer telephone. The cardboard sleeve was printed nicely and was attractive. Inside, the insert was one side photograph (expanding upon the images used for the cover of the album) and one side credits (including Thanks, Members, Guests, Recording Notes, and a note from Scott Ayotte detailing how much time and effort went into making the album a reality). Overall, very nice production value. This is a good LP to own.
>> Bottom Line: Some people may not care for the amount of slower tracks during the second half of Say Hello, but there’s just too much to love about this record to not like it. A handful of songs are just damn catchy and memorable, while the download comes with a bonus eight songs! This is a gem worth collecting.

[REVIEW] Man Overboard – The Absolute Worst 7″

MAN OVERBOARD
The Absolute Worst 7”
[Rise Records]
Stream “Girls”:

Purchase this album here > The Absolute Worst

With their recent signing to Rise Records, Man Overboard are releasing their first material for the label through the form of a two track 7” titled The Absolute Worst. If you’re unfamiliar with this band, then shame on you. This is your chance to get caught up, so do yourself a favor and do so. This 7” is composed of “The Absolute Worst” and “I Saw Behemoth And It Ruled”, one track on each side of the vinyl. Not to any fan’s surprise, these two new songs are well worth your time (though “I Saw Behemoth And It Ruled” has actually been heard in another form on a previous MO release). This brand of honest punk rock is highly enjoyable, relateable, and fun. Any follower of Man Overboard should consider this 7” a must have, while new listeners should also highly consider picking it up. If this band continues in their previous path, we can probably expect several more of these collector items throughout the year. Look out for frequent new MO material!

PHYSICAL PACKAGE: My personal pre-order was of the red vinyl. The sleeve features old photography of a couple preparing for prom or something. However this relates to the album, the style suits the punk rock package you have received with The Absolute Worst. The red coloring of the record looks great and this is an excellent 7″ to own.
